The Ukunda Declaration on economic policy and health

At the first African regional conference of Social Science and Medicine, the main issue discussed by the working group on ‘Economic Policy and Health’ was the impact of macroeconomic issues including debt, recession and structural adjustment, on the health of the majority of the populations of Africa. At the end of the conference, this group issued a statement emanating from discussions among health and social scientists from various African countries. The statement was as follows:
